When Fish Get Cut

WHEN FISH GET CUT

When fish get cut-perhaps as a result of bites from other fish-you may not see much blood.

The animal's slow metabolism means that they lose blood more slowly than some other species, and any blood that is lost gets rapidly diluted in the tank water. But blood or no, you can still see an actual cut. As soon as you spot it, isolate your wounded fish in a separate tank. This will protect the injured pet from further harm by other fish-an important step, since even normally placid fish have a tendency to nip at a wounded compatriot.

Isolating the injured fish will reduce the chances of infection, a potential problem when the mucus that covers the fish scales is damaged.

HOW DO YOU BANDAGED A FISH?

The cut will probably heal by itself, but you also can treat the wound with an aloe-based product called Stress Coat, a liquid that you add to the water in the injured Pet's tank. Ask for Stress Coat at your local Pet Store.
